My plan is to make one of those ology kind of scrapbooks. I want it to flow like a narrative text, though, sort of like Amelia’s Notebook.
In first grade we have a very basic social studies curriculum. One of the things we always do in the Spring is a unit on Community Helpers. We learn about them in class and then take a field trip around town and visit the Post Office, Bank, Police Station, Fire Station, and a restaurant. The kids love it!
My idea is to make a sort of scrapbook out of artifacts from the field trip. I want to have my character be a little girl who goes on this field trip in first grade with her teacher and steals these artifacts. She would take everything she could get her hands on… informational pamphlets about fire safety, post office to-do lists, love poems from the police chief’s wife, restaurant menus, etc. I’m also thinking about adding to my fictional field trip and doing hospital and farm as well.
Any ideas?

i LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea of the little girl stealing the artifacts! i think you are so creative. i can just see a student taking these things because they think they’re “neat”.
I LOVE this idea! You could really do some cute stuff with this. I really like the idea of having the artifacts be things that you find along the way – it’s almost like a “found” multi-genre project.
This sounds like a great idea. You could also, if you used this in your classroom, have the students pick a community helper to do their multigenre project on. They could research that particular job.
This topic sounds great. We also do community helpers in kindergarten and I can see how your students would enjoy this. You are definitely creative!
Such a good idea! Your kids are going to love it! I bet it will get them even more excited about the field trip if you show it to them ahead of time.
Even more exciting than the multigenre project is the field trip itself. I would have loved to go to important places in my town when I was in first grade. I think it would be cool to go places that most people wouldn’t see as being important such as maybe the county bus garage and maybe a mom and pa restaurant.
First of all I am really jealous you get to go on such an exciting field trip with your students. How cool to get to explore all of those places. I love the idea of you doing it like Amelia’s notebook. I think your students will really remember this and all want to make one of their own once you get back from your field trip. I am interested to see how many sticky fingers you have on the field trip trying to take artifacts to put into a book of their own
Your kids are absolutely going to love your scrapbook. You did an excellent job with your presentation. Your students must love having a teacher that is so dedicated, is able to see things from their perspective and makes learning so much fun. I hope you keep posting after this class so I can see what your students final project looks like.
I student taught in first grade and taught first grade last year. I loved having community members come into the classroom and speak about their jobs. Students loved this as well. I think your project is a creative way to introduce it into the classroom. There would be lots of integration between social studies, writing, and possibly reading. Students could use the field trips as their inspiration. If you weren’t able to tour places of work community helpers could come in and students could use them as a part of their research. Community helper books are very informational as well. Anyway….you did an excellent job.
You did a great job on community helpers. This was perfect to do for your age group. I will have to remember this for my kinders. Your scrapbook looked great!
